Village of Avon, North Carolina

Known informally as the central “hub” of Hatteras Island, Avon has a lot to offer to Outer Banks vacationers. Kiteboarders and windsurfers love the area for its exceptional access to the Pamlico Sound, particularly from the famous Canadian Hole, (or the haul over area), and neighboring Kite Point and Ego beach.

With a fishing pier and miles of beautiful beaches, surf fishermen also flock to Avon, as it’s been known as one of the best red drum fishing beaches in North Carolina. Vacation rental homes in this area can range to cozy cottages to lavish accommodations, and many Avon homes offer step-outside-your-door beach and sound access.

Vacationers love staying in Avon because it’s a resort town with lots of attractions and amenities, but still retains its old fashioned North Carolina beach charm. With beautiful beaches, exceptional water sports access and plenty of places to go, Avon is one of the Outer Banks’ more popular destinations.

Where is Kinnakeet?

Historically named “Kinnakeet,” Avon was once two villages, (Big Kinnakeet and Little Kinnakeet,) that evolved around two respected life saving stations, as the lifesaving crews and their families settled in these two soundside fishing communities. The Little Kinnakeet Station, just two miles north of Avon, still stands, hidden amidst the soundside maritime forest, and is currently being restored to its original condition by the National Park Service. In 1883, the US Post office stepped in changed the name of Big Kinnakeet to “Avon”.

NOTE: Take a bicycle ride down into old Kinnakeet and admire the architecture of island times gone by. The roads wind around older homes, churches and a picturesque weathered fish house.

Avon is for Watersports.

Besides being home to the island’s only chain grocery store, independent movie theater, and a selection of fine seafood restaurants and gift shops, Avon was meant for water lovers. The small vacation and resort communities that boarder the Pamlico Sound are the perfect playground for kiteboarders and windsurfers. Many vacation rental homes in this area offer excellent rigging and launching access, and some border beautiful saltwater canals, with small docks for boating and crabbing.

On the oceanside, the vacation rental homes border wide sandy beaches. A line of double dunes protect these homes during storms, but the ocean is close enough to make a trip to the beach a breeze. In between Avon and Buxton, visitors flock to Canadian Hole and Kite Point. As one of the first windsurfing and kiteboarding launching points in North Carolina, these soundside beaches attract thousands of windsurfers and kiteboarders every year. Right across the road is Ego Beach, where advanced kiteboarders can test their abilities soaring across the Atlantic Ocean.
