Pier Fishing on Cape Hatteras
On Hatteras Island, many anglers flock to arguably the Outer Banks of North Carolina’s three best fishing piers, the Hatteras Island Fishing Pier in Rodanthe, the Avon Fishing Pier, and the Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier in the village of Frisco. Though these fishing piers vary slightly in amenities and fees, they all offer access to some of the best fishing and most beautiful ocean views on the East Coast. Spanning approximately 15 miles apart along the national seashore, chances are there’s a pier that’s within an easy walk or drive of your rental home.
Hatteras Island Fishing Pier (AKA Rodanthe Pier)
Perhaps the most famous pier for its cameo in the 2008 Richard Gere and Diane Lane major motion picture, "Nights in Rodanthe", the Rodanthe Pier has had a long history of standing up to decades of battering waves and storms. The 850 foot pier is a veritable island landmark, and pier fishermen keep coming back year after year for bass, red drum, tarpon, kings, blues and cobia, all which can easily be the catch of the day. When it comes to fishing supplies, the tackle shop in the pier house has everything you’ll need, including rental equipment, bait, and all the sandwiches, ice cold drinks and snacks for a great day in the sun and surf.
The pier is open seasonally through December, seven days a week, from 6:30 a.m. through midnight. For more information, or to get the latest fishing report on what’s biting, call the pier at (252) 987-2323.
Avon Fishing Pier
The Avon Pier is perfect for both the seasoned angler and the family, as the pier is adjacent to Avon’s 18-hole real grass mini golf course and is close to local restaurants. The 600 foot long pier offers some of the best red drum fishing in the country, as the World All-Tackle Record for red drum weighing in at 94 pounds, 2 ounces, was caught about 200 yards from the pier in 1984. Every 4th of July, the pier is also the launching point of Avon’s phenomenal fireworks display, attracting thousands of visitors annually. With a tackle shop chock full of bait, refreshments, and souvenirs, and a convenient central Avon location, this pier is definitely worth a visit.
The pier is open seasonally until the end of November, seven days a week, from 6:00 a.m. through midnight. For fishing reports and fees, call (252) 995-5480. You can also check out the Surf or Sound Realty sponsored Avon Pier cam on our weather page.
Cape Hatteras Pier (AKA Frisco Pier)
The distinguishing lemon yellow exterior of this pier house sets it apart, and attracts local artists throughout Hatteras Island for its sheer beauty against a desolate shoreline. With a large public parking lot and exceptional access to one of Frisco’s best family and surfing beaches, anglers can take to the pier while the rest of the crew enjoys a day at the beach. The pier also offers access to world class fishing, particularly for king mackerel fishermen. There’s also a snack and bait shop, with live bait and equipment rentals, on premise in the famous yellow pier house.
The Frisco Pier is open seasonally from March through December, seven days a week, from 6:00 a.m. through 11:00 p.m. For more information and fishing reports, call (252) 986-2533.
