January 7 - 8. 8th Annual Outer Banks Wedding Expo. First Flight High
School, Kill Devil Hills. The Expo is the oldest and largest wedding
planning event on the Outer Banks and is attended by over 700 brides
and their families from across the country. The Expo is the centerpiece
of a weekend full of activities for future Outer Banks brides. A welcome
reception is scheduled for Saturday, January 7, at the Comfort Inn South
in Nags Head. The Association is planning a fashion show on Sunday at
the Expo. OBWA will also draw a winner of the Outer Banks Dream Wedding
Grand Prize, a package of wedding-related services and goods donated
by members of the Association. Nearly 100 Outer Banks wedding businesses
are expected to exhibit at the Expo, which is open only to Outer Banks

Show. On display at the Ghost Fleet Gallery in Nags Head through February.
Includes a wide variety of local fine art ranging from conceptual to

Weekend. February 18 (from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.) and February 19 (from 10

War Living History Weekend will commemorate the 144th Anniversary of
The Battle of Roanoke Island on February 18 (from 10 am to 5 pm) and
February 19 (from 10 am to 3 pm) at Roanoke Island Festival Park. The
sixth annual festival will feature re-enactors of Union and Confederate
soldiers, Civil War-Era Sailors and Civilians. Other events include period
activities such as artillery demonstrations, drills, living history encampments,

March 18. 9th Annual Polar Plunge. For the past 7 years, the Polar Plunge
has raised over $56,000 for the "We Build People" scholarship
fund that benefits children and families in need on the Outer Banks.
These scholarships are used to supplement membership costs, childcare
programs, summer camp memberships, swim lessons, and many other programs
that go on at the YMCA here on the beach. Every year, 100% of the money
raised by those who take the Plunge goes directly into this fund, and
100% of this money is used for the members of the YMCA on the Outer Banks.

May 1 – 29. 9th Annual Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show. Features
an eclectic mix of local art. On display at the Gallery at Roanoke Island
Festival Park. Held in memory of Mollie Fearing, one of the founders
of the root organization from which DCAC arose. In 1975 a group of Dare
county residents met at the home of Mollie Fearing where they set about
founding an organization that would introduce thousands of school children
and adults to music, dance, theatre, painting, sculpture, poetry and
literature. The organization would initially be called the Sea and Sounds
Arts Council and later, the Dare County Arts Council. Mollie Fearing
was elected president of the Arts Council in 1975 and was a vital supporter
and advocate of the arts until the time of her death on September 3,
1997. Mollie’s contributions to the community were numerous, from
serving as mayor for the Town of Manteo, to serving on the board of the
Roanoke Island Historical Association, to her dedication to the arts.
Mollie’s legacy in our community remains strong to this day. Open

September 9 – 10. 21th Annual Outer Banks Stunt Kite Competition.
Wright Brother Memorial (mp 8), Kill Devil Hills. This competitive fly
is on the Eastern League Circuit for sport kite flying and is also sanctioned
by the American Kiting Association. Throughout the weekend non-competitors
can enjoy workshops, demonstrations and kite making for kids. The highlights
of this event include graceful kite ballet competitions set to music,
and faced paced team flying that blend a both kite control and speed.

September 15 – 16. Day at the Docks. Hatteras Island is gearing
up for Day at the Docks – A Celebration of Hatteras Island Watermen.
The celebration will run from 10 AM to 5 PM along the harbor in Hatteras
Village. Historic boats representing several of North Carolina’s
oldest fisheries will line the site of the celebration. In addition
to shad boats, beach dories, and mullet skiffs, modern commercial fishing
vessels and charter boats will be on display, and guests can tour the
United States Coast Guard’s 47’ motor lifeboat. Commercial
fishermen and charter-boat captains will share stories describing what
it’s like to make a living from the sea. Watermen will also
demonstrate how they use different types of fishing gear, and will compete
in contests measuring their speed in the skills they use every day. Seafood
experts will teach the best way to fillet fish and pick crabs, and how
to prepare traditional island dishes. Children and their parents
are invited to join in on the fun, including a fish identification game,
hard crab races, and a scavenger hunt. There is no admission fee for

Quick Draws, music, children's auction hosted by Steve "The Dream" and
delicious food by many of your favorite Outer Banks restaurants, and
