Pier Fishing

Cast Your Line - Pier Fishing on Hatteras Island

With so much coastline, it’s no surprise that the Outer Banks is a top destination for those looking to do a bit of fishing. On Hatteras Island, many anglers flock to the fishing piers in Rodanthe and Avon. Though these fishing piers vary slightly in amenities and fees, they both offer access to both great fishing and breathtaking ocean views.

What to Know about the Rodanthe Pier

The Rodanthe Pier, which made a cameo in the 2008 Richard Gere and Diane Lane major motion picture, Nights in Rodanthe, has had a long history of standing up to decades of battering waves and storms. You can even stay at the Inn at Rodanthe, an iconic setting of this film. After filming wrapped, the then-owners renovated the oceanfront home to emulate what was shown in the movie. They even used original props from the set.

This pier, also referred to as the Hatteras Island Fishing Pier, is not only a veritable island landmark but also a prime location for anglers hoping to reel in bass, red drum, tarpon, kings, blues, and cobia.

When it comes to fishing supplies, the tackle shop in the pier house has everything you’ll need, including rental equipment and bait. You can also stock up on all the sandwiches, ice-cold drinks, and snacks needed for a great day in the sun and surf.

The Rodanthe Pier is open seasonally from spring until after Thanksgiving, seven days a week. For more information or to get the latest fishing report on what’s biting, call the pier at 252.987.0030.

Visit the Avon Fishing Pier

The Avon Pier is perfect for both the seasoned angler and the family. The pier offers some of the best red drum fishing in the area. In fact, the World All-Tackle Record for red drum, which weighed 94 pounds, 2 ounces, was caught about 200 yards off the pier in 1984.

Every year on the 4th of July, the pier hosts Avon’s phenomenal fireworks display, attracting thousands of visitors annually. With a tackle shop full of bait, refreshments, and souvenirs and a convenient central Avon location, this pier is definitely worth a visit.

This Hatteras Island fishing pier is open seasonally until the end of November, seven days a week. For fishing reports and fees, call 252.995.5480.
