Kayaks come in single and tandem to enjoy with a friend. Kayak tours are provided by area recreation providers, a popular one being the sunset paddle at the new inlet boat ramp in Pea Island. Some recreation companies also offer full moon paddles for the more adventurous in the group. Paddling the kayak is easily learned with a quick lesson from your rental agent or kayak tour guide.
Kayaks can also be used in the ocean for riding the waves. Sit-on-top kayaks are most common for beginner ocean kayakers. These enable you to jump on and off easily. The more advanced paddlers will use a neoprene skirt to enclose the kayak and keep the water out as they expertly dance along the wave tops and roll the kayak with their paddles.
