One of the newest and fastest growing ways to ride the waters of the Outer Banks is by paddleboard. Commonly called “SUP”, an acronym for “stand-up-paddleboarding”, this sport is easily learned by most requiring mostly balance, paddle technique and proper foot positioning.

What’s SUP ~ Paddleboarding on Hatteras Island
A paddleboard is a large surfboard, shaped for standing on and using a paddle to make your way across the surface of the water. The boards can be paddled in the ocean or the sound, but typically beginners prefer to use the boards in calm waters. Paddleboarding at sunrise or sunset can be an especially rewarding experience. If you are renting a home close to a soundside access, this can be a wonderful sport to learn and enjoy during your stay. The warm, shallow waters of the sound make for ideal paddleboarding conditions.
Some paddleboards are large enough to stand a child on with an adult for a fun way to experience the water together. Of course, safety precautions should always be taken when venturing out on the water with children.
Paddleboards can be rented and lessons are available at many local recreation providers. Rentals can be delivered to and picked up from your rental home for your convenience.
